Dan Potter’s electronic projects: Infinite Machine and Contours

WARCHESTRA- I played cello on a few really fun strobe-lit club gigs for Dan Potter’s Warsnare project. His album ‘Infinite Machine’ fuses jungle, breaks, grime and Brazilian dance styles with live strings and guest vocalists including Kate Tempest, Vienna Shilling and Charlie Stark. NEW ALBUM- CONTOURS 

Off the back of those gigs I am now collaborating with Dan as a vocalist and lyricist on his upcoming album- CONTOURS. The album will launch later in 2021 as a 360 degree live show in the round, featuring an 8 piece brass band, drums, piano, electronics and me and Rosie Strobel on vocals.

It has been very exciting to collaborate with DJ and musician Djrum (Felix Manuel) on this beautifully crafted and expertly produced genre-bending album. I’ve always loved listening to electronic and dance music but never had the chance to play cello in this genre until now.

For this album I improvised fragments of solo cello which Felix sensitively manipulated, re-arranged and featured throughout, blending with his improvised piano melodies, electronic beats, speech samples, textural soundscapes and Lola Empire’s vocals. The album is critically acclaimed and gained a nomination for BBC Radio 6 Giles Peterson’s Worlwide Awards: ‘Album of the Year’ in 2018.

Amanda Palmer and Jherek Bischoff at Union Chapel

There are four singer- songwriters who have deeply affected and influenced me, whose music has been healing and empowering throughout my life. These are Fiona Apple, Laura Marling, Laura Moody and Amanda Palmer. Although they all have very different styles of writing and singing, I think that they all share a special ability to express profound emotions in an honest and raw way.

It was a huge privilege to perform with one of those- Amanda Palmer– at the Union Chapel! She is a generous, compelling and fearless performer. I played in a string quartet alongside wonderful players Una Palliser (violin), Anisa Arslanagic (violin) and Joshua Hayward (viola). We performed Jherek Bischoff’s beautifully atmospheric and cinematic music for String Quartet and Bass Guitar- which I had previously played in Macedonia in 2016- followed by arrangements of many of Amanda Palmer’s songs, plus some David Bowie and Pink Floyd covers.

Charlotte Church and Blossoms @ Festival No.6 at Tate Britain

I had a great time playing to a huge crowd at Tate Britain with Charlotte Church for her ‘Love Bomb’ performance, as part of the Festival No. 6 Ensemble. We played composer/conductor Joe Duddell’s fantastic arrangements of well known classics by Jeff Buckley and Eryka Badu- Charlotte demonstrating an incredible vocal range and real soul- followed by arrangements of catchy upbeat indie hits by Brit Award nominees ‘Blossoms’.
